A true collectors’ item, this one-of-a-kind, beautiful hand-made Tokoname-ware kyusu by the renowned master craftsman Hokujo Shimizu (designated a traditional craftsman by the Japanese government in 1994) is metallic dark brown at the top and shades lighter toward the bottom on the outside and unglazed on the inside. The inside of the teapot will change colour over time and with use as the iron in the clay reacts to tea. The rich iron content in Tokoname-ware clay is also said to produce a mellower taste in tea.
Perfectly crafted, balanced, light and easy to handle, this kyusu has a wavey, flared rim at the top and the characteristic no-drip spout, perfectly fitted lid and built-in sasame style ceramic strainer. This is a good-sized teapot that will accommodate a variety of Japanese green teas. It was made in 2017, comes in a traditional kiribako (paulownia) protective wooden storage box and includes a certificate of authenticity. Another masterpiece!
Expect the clay to change colour with use and as you and your kyusu get to know one another. For best results, use this kyusu with one tea kind as the unglazed clay will take on flavours.
