About Kintsugi (Golden Repair)

Kintsugi

We’ve been interested in kintsugi for some time and have had enquiries about kits. When we were in Japan in November and December of 2019, we were able to attend a kinstugi workshop in Tokyo. The workshop provided some background information and a chance to try our hand at doing some repairs within a limited time.

Kintsugi (golden repair) is the art of repairing broken ceramics by embracing and celebrating flaws and imperfections. Urushi lacquer and powdered gold, silver or platinum are used to transform what was broken into something more beautiful and original. Cracks are highlighted with shapes and patterns that reference natural forms like rivers, waterfalls or landscapes. The process requires patience as it is intricate and can be time consuming. In the end you will create a new favourite piece to enjoy and appreciate. In the process you may discover something about yourself!

We are excited to collaborate with a supplier with great starter kits to share with you. Ms. Yuki Matano created this starter kit under the supervision of her instructor, Mr. Katsyta Shibata. Mr. Shibata is a recognized artisan with over 30 years of experience with Japanese lacquerware and kintsugi.
