From world recognized master craftsman Mr. Sabun Kubo, this handcrafted black bamboo (kurodake) chasen is a distinctive addition to any set of matcha utensils.
Shin kazuho is the “true” or standard chasen with 64 strands, which means that the chasen is durable. The strands on this chasen are shaped to be thinner at the end to make them even more durable and still produce excellent froth.
Black bamboo has softer, more flexible fibre than white bamboo and this helps to protect against cracking. The high density of black bamboo makes it especially difficult to carve, but produces a beautiful chasen that lasts longer than those made of other bamboo. This characteristic, along with the number and design of the strands is particularly helpful in dry climates.
This special chasen for matcha tea is made by Mr. Sabun Kubo the descendent of 24 generations of chasen artisans, designated by the Japanese government in 1987. His chasens are beautifully detailed and use a local bamboo that is dried for 2 years. They are 100% natural and chemical-free. MATSU KAZE TEA imports his products directly by air in order to maintain quality.
Note: The handles can crack, especially in dry climates. This does not impact the functionality of the chasen. For some, it is consistent with Japanese art to see this as adding character.
