This handcrafted, palm-sized shiboridashi (“squeeze out”) Tokoname unglazed teapot from the Gyokkou kiln is designed for gyokuro as well as high-end sencha and kabusecha teas. It has no handle and is made for lower temperature, slower brewing. The shallow design allows the tealeaves to fully open and the lid is used to strain the tealeaves when pouring. Beautiful koku-sujihiki (“black clay with lines”) circles characterize the exterior and provide texture. Red Tokoname clay is turned black by a special firing process. Iron from the clay is infused with your teas.
